BANGKOK, 31 October 2014 – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has approved three additional draft laws in their first reading. One of them concerns the improvement of the social security system to benefit more workers.
During their latest meeting, NLA members voted 150-4 with 19 abstentions to accept the Social Security Bill in principle. As a revision of the existing law, the bill seeks to extend the social security coverage to temporary staff of government offices, clarify the definition of the term “disabled employees” and raise the state contribution to the Social Security Fund.
Minister of Labor Gen Surasak Kanchanarat affirmed that the much-awaited bill will be beneficial to all insured persons and the nation as a whole. He said the bill is considered an improved version of the current law as it is more inclusive.
At the same time, the Fisheries Bill was passed in the first reading on a vote of 179-1 with 4 abstentions. The bill is aimed to update fishery-related laws in order for them to correspond to technological advancement and current social conditions as well as lay down a system for sustainable management and conservation of marine resources.
The NLA also voted 184-2 with 4 abstentions to approve the Sports Authority of Thailand Bill, which seeks to modernize related laws to pave the way for improvements in the Thai sport sector.
