A Pattaya food seller lost her life savings after being duped into installing a hacker’s app on her phone.

Sakorn Kanawapee, 42, filed a report April 1 with Nongprue police that she had 500,000 baht stolen from her bank after falling for the scam.

The stewed pork leg seller said she had received a call from someone claiming to be from the Provincial Waterworks Authority who said they needed her personal information in order to swap out her water meter. They directed her down to download an Android app for her smartphone called “MWA OnMobile”.

She did and completed all her information and, as directed, left the app open. But it took a while and the lightbulb suddenly came on that maybe this was a scam. She checked her bank and found a half-million baht missing.
Sakorn feels there’s little she can do but now has put her family into financial distress.

The “MWA OnMobile” App that scammers asked the pork vendor to install on her mobile phone that exposed her bank account to the digital theft.
