SATUN, 20 November 2014 – Rubber planters in the southern province of Satun have received the assistance fund from the government to compensate their losses from plunging prices of rubber.
Thailand is the world’s largest producer and exporter of natural rubber. The current government has speeded up the program to assist rubber farmers, who have been hit hard by tumbling rubber prices in the world market.
The government kicked off the program four days ago for rubber growers nationwide. Each planter is entitled to a compensation of 1,000 baht per rai, with no more than 15,000 baht per household.
The chief of Satun’s Agriculture office, Udorn Chanthep called a meeting with local officials on Wednesday before handing out the long awaited fund. He also invited those farmers to register their information with the office to gain more help that would come in the future, probably in forms of technology and market assistance.
