TRANG, Nov 21 —   A number of Thailand’s southern provinces are now under severe floodwater, with the Meteorological Department issued warnings that heavy rain is expected to continue to batter the region.

The Meteorological Department in the South has warned that residents of the six southern provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat should remain on alert for at least one more day for the possibility of heavy rain.

Trang Governor Somsak Parisuttho Hemtanont here has declared the provincial seat and Na Yong districts as disaster zones, for the second time this month, after more than 200 homes in five villages were damaged Wednesday by forest runoff from the Banthad Mountain Range.

Some areas are covered by floodwaters as high as 60 centimetres.

Although rain has stopped in Phatthalung province and the level of floodwaters in four districts has started to recede, villages in Khuan Khanun district are still under water, forcing a local school to temporarily suspend classes.

Villagers in at least two villages must travel by boat as floodwaters are still one metre deep.

The torrential rain which battered the southern province of Narathiwat has now stopped.

An aerial survey indicated that residents of Sungai Kolok district are affected by floodwaters overflowing the river.
