Phuket tourist island reported about 150 diarrhea cases daily as the disease investigation is under way to determine the cause of the illness outbreak.
About 50 cases were recorded at state hospitals and about 100 cases at private hospitals each day in many areas including student patients at many schools.
The patients suffer stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea and some cases experience fever.
Phuket governor Narong Woonciew and Phuket public health chief Dr. Kusak Kukiattikoon told a press conference that the situation is under control. Hospital beds, medical supplies and medicines are sufficient to handle the current situation.
Most cases are not severe but it is contagious. Local residents are advised to eat hot, freshly cooked and clean food. The outbreak could last 1-2 months.
It is initially believed that the disease may relate to contamination with Norovirus, Rotavirus, or E.coli bacteria in drinking water or ice.
Officials are investigating ice making factories to collect samples for testing. The lab test results will be known in 5-7 days. (TNA)
