BANGKOK, 10 December 2014 – Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday afternoon (9 Dec) proceeded to the Cultural Center for the Lower Northern Region located in Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University in Phitsanulok Province, to present the Red Cross Award Medals (First Class), certificates of honor and commemorative pins to those who have donated blood for 36 times and 108 times to the Thai Red Cross Society.

A total of 863 blood donors received the medals and pins from the Princess, 23 of whom were monks. They were from 11 provinces in the lower North such as Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, Uttaradit , Phrae and Nan. The awards are to honor the voluntary non-remunerated blood donors for their contribution to save lives and improve health conditions of people

The Thai Red Cross Society started its blood transfusion service in 1952. The objective is to collect safe and sufficient blood supplies for patients all over the country. The present target of blood recruitment is 1.9 million units annually: 600,000 units in Bangkok and 1.35 million units in provincial areas. Although the number of blood donors is on the rise, demands for blood also increase 8-10% annually, prompting all Red Cross units to campaign for blood donations every three months.
