DPU Poll confirms rising popularity of Pheu Thai in Bangkok

BANGKOK, 24 June 2011 – Popularity of the Pheu Thai Party is ahead of the Democrat Party in many constituencies in Bangkok, according to the third survey jointly conducted by the Research Centre of Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU) and the Nation Group. 

The survey was conducted from 18 to 20 June 2011, before the major campaign of the Democrat Party at Ratchaprasong Intersection on Thursday night, with 9,317 respondents with eligibility to vote in 33 constituencies in Bangkok.

Based on the survey result, Pheu Thai Party candidates are leading the Democrat counterparts in 22 constituencies, up by four constituencies, while Democrat runners are gaining more supporters in six constituencies. The two parties remain neck and neck in the race in five other constituencies.

As for the estimated turnout, 88% of the respondents will go to vote while 8% are unsure. 4% will not go. 62% have decided which party they will vote for and will not change their mind while 6% already making their choice admit that the decision might change. 26% remain undecided while 2% will ‘vote no’. 4% refused to answer.

As for a preferred choice of prime minister, 47% and 39% of the respondents want Pheu Thai candidate Yingluck Shinawatra and Democrat candidate Abhisit Vejjajiva respectively. Rak Santi’s Police General Purachai Piumsombun and Rak Thailand’s Chuvit Kamolvisit follow with 7% and 4% respectively.

In the first survey from 23 to 25 May 2011 with 6,230 respondents, the Pheu Thai Party was leading in 19 constituencies while the Democrat Party was leading in five constituencies. Competition in nine other constituencies was even-steven.

In the second survey from 3 to 6 June 2011 with 8,616 respondents, the Pheu Thai Party took the lead in 18 constituencies while the Democrat Party gained more support in six constituencies. The situation in nine other constituencies remained neck and neck.
