Monday, Dec. 22, Plutaluang – Stableford

It was Christmas week so there were quite a few absentees who returned home for the festive season, and also two small groups disappeared up to Chiang Mai and Kanchanaburi.

We alternate the four nines on each visit to Plutaluang and today we were playing the East and West nines.  The course and clubhouse were totally deserted and we teed off 30 minutes ahead of schedule with only two divisions out and the cut set at 7-19 and 20 +.

Bob Poole & Terry Madsen.Bob Poole & Terry Madsen.

There was an amazing 12 point differential between first and third places in division 1, with Allan Hansen, playing off 16, winning with a fine 40 points.  Thomas Naughton came in second on 33 and Paul Butler took third with 28.

Alan Bissell returned 38 points to win division 2 ahead of Charlie Charalambous in second on 33 and Volker Suhr, just back from Switzerland with his lovely lady Verana, was third on 31.

Near pins went to (Div. 1) Gordon Angus and Paul Butler, and (Div. 2) Alan Bissell and Charlie Charalambous.

Jaap Zuidam birdied the 4th on the South course to record the only ‘2’ of the day.

Wednesday, Dec. 24, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

We still had only two divisions out today, with the cut coming at 8-17 in the top flight and 18+ in division 2.

Over the past month the greens here at Mountain Shadow have become very slick, and usually married with some tough pin placements.  This was certainly reflected in the scores today with two 31 pointers fighting for the top podium position in division 1 and Kit Parkington beating Reijo Heiskanen 19/18 on the back nine.  Max Alabor took third with just 28 points.

In division 2, there were three 27’s vying for first place and with a count back of 16/15/14, Geoff Stubbs was declared the winner ahead of David Taylor and William Chang in second and third places respectively.

Near pins were claimed by (Div. 1) Reijo Heiskanen, Kit Parkington (2) and Chris Voller, and (Div. 2) Bob Poole, Howard Stanley and Geoff Stubbs.

Kit Parkington birdied the 5th and 17th to take the rollover first division ‘2’s pot and there were none in the second tier.

Friday, Dec. 26, Eastern Star – Stableford

There were a few sore heads standing on the first tee but amazingly no cancellations after yesterday’s celebrations and there were 32 players out, so three divisions with the equal cut at 8-14, 15-19 and 20+ in division 3.

The course was very busy, as expected, but the first group still got round in just under 4 hours.

The best score of the day was an amazing 40 points from Colin Aspinall to win division 2.  Paul Butler trailed in second six points behind after beating Allan Hansen on a 19/16 back nine count back.

Ciaran Lyne was the winner in division 3 with 38 points and the newly returned Sheffield boy, Howard Stanley, was second after beating Rodney Howett 16/14 on the back nine, both on 31 points each.

In division 1 there were four cards returned with 34 points and a 20/19/19/15 back nine count back saw Wilf Latham take first place, Bill Bertram in second, Chris Voller third and poor Terry Madsen lost out.

Near pins went to (Div. 1) Dik Lenten, Wilf Latham, Terry Madsen and Joe McArdle, and (Div. 2) Colin Aspinall, Donal Lyne and Michael Lyne.

Ciaran Lyne scored the only birdie of the day on the 13th to scoop the division 2 rollover pot.
