BANGKOK, 13 January 2015 – Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Defence, is scheduled to visit the Socialist Republic of Vietnam from 13-15 January 2015, following an invitation by his Vietnamese counterpart.
The three-day official visit is aimed at tightening the good relationship between Thailand and Vietnam, and also to continue cooperation projects that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha had laid down during his recent official visit to that country.
During the visit, the Thai delegation will make a courtesy call on Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Vietnamese Defence Minister Gen Phung Quang Thanh.
They will discuss the development of military cooperation conducted under the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both countries in 2012. The MoU stipulates collaboration in national defense, intelligence, military exercises, among others.
Moreover, they will use this chance to discuss the construction of transport routes across the Mekong sub-region, the establishment of special economic zones along their borders, the supra-national joint security in order to ensure regional security and improve the quality of life of people living along respective borders.
