Military, provincial and local officials led newly reorganized beach vendors in a cleanup of Pattaya-area beaches.

Maj. Gen. Nirandorn Samutsakorn, commander of 14th Military Circle in Chonburi, and Chonburi Deputy Gov. Chawalit Saeng-Uthai joined officials from Banglamung District, Pattaya City Hall and the Tourism Authority of Thailand in the Wednesday, Jan. 7 cleanup of Pattaya and Jomtien beaches.

The cleanup marked the start of the new beach-chair system, which reorganized umbrella vendors into compact blocks so as to return more sand to the public. As they had to move all their chairs and umbrellas, public officials deemed it a good time to give the beachfront a thorough scrubbing.

Under the new system, vendors will be required to remove all chairs and umbrellas every Wednesday and use that time to clean their plots to keep the shoreline tidy.

Similar campaigns will be held in the future to maintain the environment, officials said.
