In a recent special address at the Dinner Talk event with a focus on Thailand’s Future in 2024, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin discussed the need for strong economic action. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas served as a backdrop, highlighting the broader vulnerabilities that Thailand must navigate.
The Prime Minister emphasized the societal disparities that these global events illuminate within Thailand. Short-term government initiatives such as agricultural debt relief, electricity and fuel cost reductions, and the introduction of a digital wallet system were all cited as essential for economic rejuvenation.
Prime Minister Srettha argued that while some may agree or disagree with these measures, the government remains open to feedback. This is crucial as Thailand’s economy needs a boost, particularly for those in grassroots communities who are facing hardships.
Addressing the upcoming government program, which promises a 10,000 Baht stipend through digital wallets, the Prime Minister clarified certain restrictions. These include a distance limitation of 4 kilometers to encourage spending in local communities rather than major cities.
The limitation aims to revitalize local shops and businesses, contrasting with the option of cash payments, which could centralize spending in Bangkok. Further explanations regarding the program’s full scope and public recommendations will be unveiled upon its completion.
Lastly, the premier expressed the government’s commitment to instilling hope and motivation, especially for the younger generation. Plans are in place to offer appropriate interest rates on loans to facilitate better opportunities for all. (NNT)
