As the IPGC Championships were to be played over two days on Wednesday the 4th and Friday the 6th at Khao Kheow, arguably the best course for competition play in the area, there was to be just one event played from The Haven last week.  So the warm up round was set for what is currently rated as the second best course on the schedule – Greenwood, with the tough C course added into the mix with the A nine.

John Carlin.John Carlin.

A fairly stiff breeze greeted the hopefuls on arrival making the nines even longer, but the condition of the course generally was as usual excellent and the CSS for the day remained at 72.

With the group set to start from the C1 tee when the wind was at its strongest, the scores for the front nine were all below handicap par as the winner, John Carlin, bore out, going out in 16 and then coming back with an extremely strong 21 points on the A nine.

Bob Morrissey took second place after he had returned the best front nine with 17 points, and but for a weaker finish over the last three holes when scoring just four points he would have possibly snatched the win, finishing just two behind at the end.

Terry Hodgkiss looked good after three holes, having amassed 8 points, but then slipped in a couple of zeros and never got back into contention, but his start ensured that he won the count back, which is always held over the back nine on the card for the nines played, with a better 16 to 15 to consign playing partner Markku Tynell into fourth.

Ron Rigden made it a happy return as he claimed the last podium spot in fifth another two back.

There were no 2’s in the first division but Tony O’Neill took the rollover pool in the second division with a five footer on A 6.
