The Fine Arts Department has announced the return of the popular night tour program of ancient temples in Ayutthaya province, now officially named “Ayutthaya Sundown 2024.” The program, initially launched last year as part of the government’s soft power promotion policy, will run from February 2 to April 30.
The night tours, which contributed to a 40% increase in visitors to Ayutthaya and boosted local tourism revenue, will include extended visiting hours until 9 pm at key historical sites like Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Wat Ratchaburana, and Chantharakasem Palace. The tours will be available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Fine Arts Department Director-General Phanombut Chantarachot noted the positive economic impact of the tours. The rental of traditional Thai costumes for photo opportunities at these attractions alone generated an estimated income of 600,000-700,000 baht per weekend during the previous two-month program. The revenue from entrance fees to Ayutthaya Historical Park in November and December also exceeded 2 million baht.
Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, was the former capital of the Siam Kingdom from 1350 and thrived as a hub of global diplomacy and commerce until the 18th century. The Fine Arts Department is considering a proposal to implement similar night tour programs in other historical parks across Thailand, including Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces.
