The Betong District Tourism Association has announced a plan to propose an expansion of the Betong International Airport’s runway to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin during his visit to the district this week.
The association’s deputy president, Narin Ruangwongsa, announced the plan, which aims to extend the runway from 1.8 kilometers to 2.5 kilometers. This expansion would enable the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, potentially increasing the number of visitors to the area by making travel more affordable.
Srettha, along with Cabinet members, including Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Tourism Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Justice Minister Pol Col Tawee Sodsong, and Culture Minister Sermsak Phongpanich, will be concentrating efforts on enhancing tourism in the deep South region, which includes the provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.
Last year, Yala province attracted over 1.6 million visitors to the Betong district alone, generating significant revenue. The proposed runway extension is part of a broader plan to increase tourism by promoting the district’s historical sites, cultural diversity, and natural beauty. The plan also involves organizing activities, such as “Betong Trail Running” and “Ecotourism Route Cycling,” in addition to highlighting Thai-Muslim cultural festivities and other local celebrations.
