A descendant of the 19th century’s King Rama V helped Chi Chan Elephant park celebrate Thailand’s National Elephant Day.

M.R. Worapapa Jakapan, who traces her royal family tree back through Prince Chaturonrasmi, King Chulalongkorn’s younger brother, presided over the “Love Elephants, Love Mahouts” event March 13.

Senior mahout Muang Salangam initiated the “pakam spirit” ceremony before Worapapa lit candles and sticks of incense to worship the three gems. She then delivered an opening speech.

Chaiklang Apinyano from the Rama 9 Kanjanaphisek Temple was invited to give a sermon on the importance of elephants in Thailand throughout history. He also gave King Naresuan the Great amulets to every mahout before the animal guests of honor feasted on a buffet of fruits and vegetables.

National Elephant Day was designated to have Thais recall the role the giant mammals have played in their history, serving as beasts of labor and war.
