Chiang Mai province is bustling with excitement as locals and tourists alike engage in spirited water fights to celebrate Songkran amid scorching temperatures reaching 40 °C. The streets of Chiang Mai Old Town, especially around the Sriphum, Katam, Ku Heuang, and Hua Lin intersections, have been experiencing sporadic traffic congestion since Friday (Apr 11) due to the lively festivities.
In preparation for the official “Songkran Chiang Mai Water Fest 2024,” which began on Saturday (Apr 12) at Tha Phae Gate, revelers have set up various water stations along the road leading to this prominent tourism landmark, a welcome relief for passersby and motorists from the intense heat.
The festival kicked off early Saturday morning with a religious ceremony that included alms-giving, followed by a special procession. The highlight of the procession was the Phra Buddha Sihing statue, which was taken from its shrine at Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan. Adorned with flowers, the statue was paraded around the city, allowing attendees to pay respects and seek blessings.
Chiang Mai will continue to host numerous Songkran activities and religious ceremonies at various public places and temples throughout the province until April 16, offering rich cultural experiences to both residents and visitors. (NNT)
