The car bomb at Central Festival department store on Samui Island may have been
an attempt by anti-government groups to stir up a situation under the disguise of an
attack perpetrated by Deep South insurgents, said the deputy government spokesman,
Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd.
According to Maj. Gen. Sansern, there is credible information pointing to the car
bomb having been set up in a way that the vehicle used to carry the bomb was
stolen from the Deep South province of Yala. He said security officials believed the
masterminds of the attack were individuals within a previously reigning political
group.
Meanwhile, Police Major General Somchai Nittayabawonkun, deputy commissioner
of Provincial Police Region 8, said police were tracking down a man in blue shirt who
was seen on security cameras driving the car that later exploded into the shopping
mall’s parking lot. 15 security guards currently working at the shopping mall have
been questioned by police, and another 8 who no longer work there are being
summoned for questioning.
