Dark stains that marred the Naklua Beach area were caused by natural sediment washed in by waves, not oil from an offshore spill, the Marine Department said.

Pattaya officials investigated the black marks, which stretched for about three kilometers. City workers cleaned the beach near the Moom Aroi Restaurant with most saying it looked like oil.

Eakarath Kantaro of the Marine Department noted that residents and fishermen in the area say the stains are natural and eventually disappear in a few days.
