The government is prioritizing the urgent resolution of the nation’s drug problem, focusing on suppression, treatment, rehabilitation, and care.
Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke revealed that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin considers addressing the drug issue as critical and urgent. He noted that drug proliferation, particularly among youth and the working population, undermines the nation’s strength.
Various agencies have been assigned to collaborate on the “Suppression, Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Care” initiative.
Provincial governors are tasked with integrating efforts and coordinating with the police, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), other government agencies, and local communities. The ONCB will act as the strategic commander, setting challenging goals and Key Performance Indicators, and ensuring necessary support and resources for the provinces. Governors and provincial police commanders must work closely together.
According to the spokesperson, comprehensive “X-ray” inspections in communities will require urine tests for all individuals aged 16 and above. Identified drug users will be sent for rehabilitation. The Royal Thai Police, Ministry of Justice, ONCB, and Ministry of Defense will expand efforts to arrest drug sellers.
The Ministry of Public Health will categorize users by severity for treatment and reintegrate them into the community when ready, ensuring adequate rehabilitation facilities. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and the Ministry of Labor will assist in vocational training and job placement to prevent relapse.
Education related agencies will develop measures to monitor and instill new values in youth, ensuring they remain drug-free. (NNT)
