Phu Phra Bat Historical Park in Udon Thani province has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it Thailand’s fifth cultural heritage site. The announcement was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, where the park was recognized for its unique Sīma stone tradition from the Dvaravati period.
According to Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, this latest addition brings the total number of cultural World Heritage sites in Thailand to five. It is the second site in Udon Thani to receive such status, following the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, which was listed in 1992.
The park, covering 3,662 rai of land, is noted for its distinctive rock formations and evidence of human settlement from the Bronze Age, including ancient paintings depicting humans and animals. In celebration of this recognition, the Fine Arts Department has waived entry fees for both Thai and foreign visitors from July 28 to August 12.
This new listing follows last year’s addition of Si Thep Historical Park in Phetchabun. Thailand now boasts three natural World Heritage sites, bringing its total to eight. (NNT)
