BANGKOK, 30 April 2015 – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has invited Bangkok residents to join the “Cycling Safely and Solve Traffic Congestion” campaign, hoping to encourage residents to use cycling in everyday life as an alternative transport, Deputy Governor of Bangkok Amorn Kitchawengkul said.
The campaign is part of the Bangkok Car Free Day 2015 aimed at promoting cycling throughout the year. The Safe Cycling campaign will continuously take place on nine biking routes during mid-May and November.
The Bangkok Car Free Day has been celebrated annually for several years. This year it is scheduled for 20 September at Ratchaprasong Intersection. For more information, please visit www.bangkokcarfree.com.
The cycling promotion and the Bangkok Car Free Day constitute a “Sustainable Transport Project” of Bangkok. Their main aims are to promote Bangkokians to use bicycles, walking as well as public transport on a daily basis. This is expected to reduce the severe traffic congestion in the capital city, curb road accidents, save energy and protect the environment.
Currently, the BMA’s Traffic and Transportation Department is improving thirty one cycling routes across the metropolis, with 232 km. in combined length and also bicycle parking zones. In parallel, the public transport infrastructure is now under construction for better links between bicycle routes and the mass transport system.
