A meeting was recently held to discuss enhancements to road safety measures in Thailand.
Chaired by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, the event was also attended by Warawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Nikorn Chamnong, Advisor to the Minister, Chadchart Sittipunt, Bangkok Governor, and other key officials from relevant organizations.
The Prime Minister shared insights from his recent meeting in Paris with Jean Todt, a renowned motorsport executive, where they explored the possibility of bringing the Formula E electric car race to Thailand. They also discussed the UN-supported Road Safety project, which aims to reduce road accidents through the use of standard helmets.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of making high-standard helmets available at prices under 700 baht to help reduce road accidents. He announced the launch of the UN Road Special Envoy for Road Safety project in Thailand, set to take place from November 1st to 6th, with Jean Todt participating in activities to promote public safety.
Governor Chadchart highlighted the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s initiative to develop youth leadership in road safety and encourage adults to also adopt road safety awareness. Additionally, the BMA has initiated a 100% helmet-wearing campaign for students, involving various departments to ensure effective implementation and community collaboration.
The UN Road Special Envoy for Road Safety project, which was initiated in 2015, will see Thailand’s first participation this year, led by Prime Minister Srettha as a “Friend of the Special Envoy.” The project focuses on six key safety areas: seatbelt use, speed limits, standard helmets, avoiding driving under the influence, staying alert while driving, and refraining from phone use while driving.
