BANGKOK, 1 May 2015 – Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha is scheduled to preside over the opening ceremony of May Day at Sanam Luang, where members of various labor networks will participate in a number of activities.
Participating laborers have planned to gather at Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge to parade along Ratchadamnoen Avenue to Sanam Luang. The government has approved a budget of four million baht for May Day activities.
This year, the Labor Congress of Thailand has planned to submit 11 requests to the premier. The demands include wage hikes, a cap on food product prices, legislation on risk insurance funds, and the ability to use Social Security cards at all hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Thai Labor Solidarity Committee (TLSC) has held a separate May Day event at Democracy Monument. The activity is intended to highlight workers’ needs, particularly a new minimum wage by next year of 360 baht per day and the adjustment of salaries according to skill level and cost of living.
