EU ambassador commends Thailand for efforts to curb IUU fishing

BANGKOK, 3 May 2015  – The Deputy Prime Minister, Prawit Wongsuwan has invited the EU ambassador to Thailand to listen to progress of the government’s solutions to IUU fishing and direction in dealing with the problem. The ambassador commended Thailand for its efforts and stressed that the country was on the right track.

Deputy Government Spokesman Sansern Kaeokamnerd on Sunday said the deputy PM told the ambassador that Thailand was amending outdated laws and working more closely with international organizations as well as NGOs in the fishery sector. He also promised full cooperation with two teams of EU delegations who would travel to Thailand to monitor solutions to IUU fishing this month.

The ambassador said he would urgently inform the EU headquarters as well as governments of EU countries of Thailand’s anti-IUU fishing operations.

The EU ambassador assured the deputy premier that the EU would work with Thailand closely in a cordial and constructive manner with respect to Thailand’s sovereignty, Maj.Gen. Sansern added.
