BANGKOK, Thailand – Severe flooding in Northern provinces, including Chiang Rai, Nan, and Phayao, has caused extensive damage to homes, roads, and agricultural lands due to continuous heavy rainfall over several days. Flash floods have inundated multiple districts, leaving many residents in distress.
In response to the disaster, Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has expressed concern for the affected residents. He directed the Ministry of Interior and provincial governors to expedite relief efforts. Additionally, he instructed the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) to manage water discharge to alleviate the flooding. The Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office was also tasked with ensuring the swift distribution of emergency relief supplies.
Phumtham urged all relevant agencies to remain on high alert, as the situation remains uncontrolled. He advised residents to follow guidance from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and stay informed of government warnings. He emphasized the importance of taking precautions against electrical hazards and advised against driving through floodwaters or traveling to high-risk areas.
The DDPM had earlier issued a flood warning, highlighting the potential for flash floods, landslides, and riverbank overflows in various districts across the affected provinces. Members of the public in the affected areas were urged to prepare for further risks as the heavy rainfall continues.
