PHUKET, Thailand – Heavy rainfall that lashed Phuket overnight triggered flash floods and landslides, killing at least five people and leaving three others missing, officials said on Friday Aug 23.

The heavy downpour caused rivers to overflow, inundating homes and roads and leaving residents scrambling to safety. A landslide swept through a rental house complex in Karon sub-district, burying several people under the debris.

Rescue workers have recovered five bodies so far and are searching for three more, believed to be Myanmar and Russian nationals.

The floods have caused widespread damage to property, with many homes and businesses submerged in water. Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the disaster and provide assistance to those affected.  Officials expect water levels to gradually recede as the rain eases and the tide goes out.
