Ministry of Public Health to propose establishment of “Thai-Nepal Friendship Health Post” in Sipaghat

BANGKOK, 8 May 2015 – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is to propose to the cabinet the establishment of a Friendship Community Health Post” in Sipaghat Subdistrict of Sindhupalchok District in Nepal.

The initiative was proposed two weeks after the powerful earthquake in Nepal and followed the participation of Thai medical teams in international rescue and relief operations in that country.

Deputy Public Health Minister Somsak Chunharas revealed after a monthly meeting of high-ranking MOPH officials that the meeting considered the proposed development of Sipaghat Health Station as the Friendship Community Health Post, and a budget would be requested from the government for the purpose.

According to a report from the Thai Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) in Nepal, the team had provided medical treatment to 1,026 Nepalese survivors during 30 April – 6 May 2015. Three of the victims were severely injured. The mobile medical unit visited 17 out of the 25 communities to observe disease control situation and found no spread of contagious diseases.

The second batch of Thai medical team is now in the field operation. Their main missions are to encourage local residents to take part in the promotion of environmental health and sanitation, disease control, mental health care and the restoration of fundamental infrastructure of health service in that country.
