Jameson’s Irish Pub – the landmark?

These days, Jameson’s is a landmark, nestling beside Nova Park, and well known to anyone who enjoys a drink and a chat and a hearty meal, which is the reason mankind invented pubs.

The landlord is Kim Fletcher, undoubtedly one of the most professional landlords in Pattaya, a man who was actually born in a pub, and is hoping not to die in one (though at times is pushing the envelope a little)!

Jameson’s is actually very easy to find. Coming from Second Road (Sai 2), turn right into Soi 4 (on your right at the Bangkok Bank) and follow the road up and round to the right and it is there, next to Nova Park. Another way to get there is to come from North Pattaya Road, turning into the soi behind Big C. Follow that soi all the way to the T-junction at the end and turn left and Nova Park and Jameson’s are on your left. There are other back alleys that will get you there too, but the directions above are for newcomers to Pattaya.

Jameson’s even looks like a pub from the outside, and indoors is the result of several trips to the forest with wood floors, a long wooden bar, and wood paneled walls. There are several designated areas starting with the “library” with huge Chesterfields; the sports area with an enormous TV screen and alcove seating; the aforementioned long bar overseen by Bob; more seated areas and even a couple of pool tables. And lots of wood.

On our review evening, we met up with Sister Joan from the Fountain of Life, a wonderful Irish nun being taken to dinner by a couple of Pattaya’s expats, and where better for her to be than in an Irish pub!

The menu is extensive, covering European/British/Irish plus a choice of 37 Thai items (with most hovering around B. 195).

While making our dinner choices I decided on a red wine, with several on offer by the glass. Eschewing the cheapest at B. 145 for a large glass, and remembering the old adage that life is too short to drink cheap wine, I went for the Stephendale at B. 260 for a big glass (and it was)! This is an excellent drop and well worth spoiling yourself for. Of course there is also a good range of beers, bottled and draft.

The menu begins with the Soup of the Day at B. 165 for a large portion, and at this point I have to mention portion size. One word – enormous! Come after a three day fast, or swallow your pride and ask for a doggy bag. Starters such as pate (S: B. 205, L: B. 330) do come as large or small, but the rest are full-on Irish navvy size starters.

Hamburgers with ‘everything’ are B. 335, fajitas range B. 365-440-495, cottage pies B. 360, fish and chips B. 395 and another two pages.

And now to the blackboard specials. These change weekly and on our evening the special was two courses for B. 375. This included a choice of three starters (cauliflower soup, potato and ham salad, deep-fried cheddar cheese with cranberry sauce) and three choices of main (pork ribs, beef and onion pie, baked chicken with macaroni and cheese).

Madame, who had not been to Jameson’s before, was just overwhelmed and enjoyed by her choices of the potato salad and the baked chicken, and did end eating for breakfast the next day.

I chose the deep-fried cheddar (great appetizer) and the pork ribs which must have come from a pig that stood two meters high. And I loved every bit of them.

For the Dining out team, Jameson’s Irish Pub still represents one of the best value pub/restaurants in town. The menu is varied and items are changed regularly. The weekly specials menu is very inexpensive for what you get and is far superior to just ‘pub grub’. With landlord Kim Fletcher having been a chef, the standard of the food is always high.

Highly recommended.
