Vietnam has evacuated nearly 50,000 people and deployed 450,000 military personnel in response to the storm.

Super Typhoon Yagi, Asia’s most powerful storm this year, made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday (Sep 7), killing at least four people and injuring 78. The storm, which had previously hit the Chinese island of Hainan and the Philippines, brought winds of up to 160 kmph as it struck Vietnam.

The typhoon had already claimed two lives in Hainan and 16 in the Philippines. In Vietnam, the coastal city of Haiphong, home to major industries, was among the hardest hit, with winds uprooting trees, damaging buildings, and sending debris flying through the air. Further inland, a man was killed by a falling tree in Hai Duong province.

Earlier in Hainan, Yagi caused widespread damage, cutting power to more than 800,000 homes and leaving the island in a state of paralysis. Emergency workers have begun clearing debris, but recovery efforts are ongoing.

Vietnam has evacuated nearly 50,000 people and deployed 450,000 military personnel in response to the storm. Four airports, including Noi Bai in Hanoi, were closed for several hours, leading to the cancellation of over 300 flights. Schools in 12 northern provinces, including Hanoi, have also been closed as the country braces for further impacts. (NNT)
