BANGKOK, Thailand – The Social Security Board has unanimously approved a significant increase in the child allowance for children aged 0-6 years, raising it from 800 baht to 1,000 baht per month (for holders of Mor.33 and Mor.39 types). This change is set to take effect in January 2025.
During the 11th meeting of the Social Security Board for 2024, August 27, representatives from employers, insured persons, and government agencies agreed on the increase. This adjustment will benefit approximately 1.2 million children, with 98% being Thai workers’ children and 2% being children of migrant workers.
Associate Professor Satharam Thambutsadee, a representative of the insured persons on the Social Security Board, stated that the new allowance will be proposed to the Minister of Labor for further discussion with the Cabinet. Following this, a request will be made for a royal decree to amend the Ministry of Labor’s regulations.
The child allowance was last increased in April 2021, from 600 baht to 800 baht. The recent increase has been carefully evaluated and will not impact the Social Security Fund adversely. The board has confirmed that the adjustment will be implemented immediately.
While the increase in child allowance may not significantly boost the birth rate, as studies show that even countries with extensive welfare systems have declining birth rates, it is hoped to enhance the quality of child-rearing among workers.
