Monday, May 4, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Bob Watson (3) 38pts

2nd Muffy Kerr (11) 37pts

3rd Phil Williams (13) 36pts

We finally got back to Green Valley this week after the Singha Tour event that left us a course with tough pin positions and ultrafast greens.  It was fantastic to see RGV in even better shape than we usually find it every week.  We had a full card of 32 golfers here today which made for a great Monday competition.

Tabata, Teddy and Rick back at TGC.Tabata, Teddy and Rick back at TGC.

That suited some people while others found it a bit too much.  Phil ‘the Horse’ Williams didn’t mind it at all as he cruised to a level 36 on the card.  Muffy Kerr has played this course a lot and after a few pointers from his sons, he got game!

Story of the day was Bob Watson, as his round off the stick was probably better than many of the pros that were playing here the previous week.  Well played mate!  I doubt Bob will be picking any Boomtown Rats hits for his karaoke sessions anytime soon!

Wednesday, May 6, Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford

1st Mark Wood (8) 36pts

2nd Jimmy Dundon (15) 35pts

T3rd Rick Allison (2) 34pts

T3rd Lothar Eggar (16) 34pts

T3rd Mathias Herman (13) 34pts

This can be a tough round of golf sometimes but that is what makes this course exciting.  I remember a few years back we were on the 17th white tee and over on the blue tee box was a giant 5-foot long monitor lizard strolling past a monkey sitting on the hole marker sign eating a banana.  There’s a lot of nature out here and you never know what you will find around the next corner.  Those are some of the distractions you have to deal with out here.

It was a pretty hot day today and we have been getting more rain than what is usual for this time of year.  We are seeing some very intense rain showers that are also very localized, so it is a bit of a crapshoot for weather predictions.  Hopefully things will get back to normal soon.

Fast greens are always a concern at this golf course and that is where points are won or lost.  We had a gaggle of golfers that hit that 34 point mark today, which is a respectable number at Bangpra.  One better than that was Jimmy Dundon (in good form lately) and his 35 earned him sole second place.  Jimmy was frustrated the week before as his outstanding 43 still wasn’t good enough for the win.  Hang in there Jim, it will come!

Mark Wood was the big winner here today and a well deserved one at that.  Mark plays off 8 and was the only golfer to shoot his handicap today, which is about right for Bangpra.

Friday, May 8, Phoenix (White tees) – Stableford

1st Teddy Ogawa (16) 37pts

T2nd Tabata (13) 36pts

T2nd Rick Allison (2) 36pts

It was a day for the tourists as Phoenix found a leaderboard full of visitors giving the locals a lesson.  We arrived to find some dark and dodgy clouds about but managed to pretty much get away with it.  As most of you are aware, the Lakes course here will be closed for the next several months as a comprehensive refurbishment schedule will leave this one of the best tracks in town.

Two of the other Asian nations were represented on the podium as Rick Allison from Australia and Tabata and Teddy Ogawa from Japan were the only golfers to shoot their handicap or better here today.  Nice going to them all, and thanks to everyone for your continued support.

One more thing, congratulations and happy anniversary to our mates Roachie, Bob, Gareth and Micky at The Players Lounge who celebrated their 2nd Anniversary on the darkside on Saturday. Hope you boys have many more!
