PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Monday, May 11, Eastern Star – Stableford

Seventeen starters gathered today at Eastern Star anticipating the day’s challenges.  The weather was quite warm with a cool breeze affording some welcome relief.  The greens were in superb condition, however very slow and you know a course is dry when the trees start bribing dogs.

Even from the forward yellow tees only two players were able to beat their handicap today, with Denis Steele scoring a splendid thirty nine points to stand atop the podium.

In second place and with the biggest reversal in form since Jamie Oliver went from putting icing on the scones in mum’s kitchen to a leading world chef, John Anderson handed in thirty seven points.

Third was Jim Groves with thirty four points, edging out Mike Gosden on the same score.

The Coveted Compass Cap was collected by Gordon Clegg in a display of ineptitude not seen since gallstones and coals of fire wreaked havoc on Sodom and Gomorrah.

Thursday, May 14, Crystal Bay – Stableford

Sixteen eager players gathered in Soi Chaiyapoon and despite drizzling rain being in attendance headed off in high spirits.  During the journey the precipitation eased and as a matter of fact appeared little had fallen in vicinity of the course.  It was overcast with a cool breeze which made for very pleasant conditions.

On our last visit here the greens had more varieties of grass in them than found at Woodstock in 1969, however they have improved considerably and were given fifty kazoos by the field.

The course was in good nick and from the white tees Graham Rice made the Spanish inquisition look like euthanasia as he handed in thirty eight points to finish three points clear at the top.

Mike Gosden ran second with thirty five points whilst Mark Stapleton, despite buckling on the back nine managed to hang on for third spot, also on thirty five.  Fourth place went to Alex Field on thirty four points.

1st Graham Rice (14) 38pts

2nd Mike Gosden (15) 35pts

3rd Mark Stapleton (19) 35pts

4th Alex Field (19) 34pts

Near Pins: Mark Stapleton, Ebrahim, Chris Hill and Tom Price.

Long Putts: Peter Grey, Mashie Kaneta.

Despite being able to sing the Peruvian national anthem in reverse, Russell Calcutt’s golf didn’t match his undoubted musical talents and the Coveted Compass Cap duly adorned his wardrobe, albeit briefly.
