BANGKOK, 12 July 2011  – The Department of Export Promotion (DEP) has warned Thai exporters to brace themselves for possible impacts from the Commercial Seafood Consumer Protection Act, which will be enforced by the US in six months.

DEP Director-General Nuntawan Sakuntanaga indicated that the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation last month gave approval for the Commercial Seafood Consumer Protection Act, which was designed to raise the standard of seafood safety and to eradicate seafood-related frauds. As a consequence, she believed that exporters of Thai seafood products, especially frozen shrimps, would somehow be affected by the new law.

Therefore, all concerned agencies, both public and private, are encouraged to pay attention to the matter very closely and find measures to stave off potential impacts. Nonetheless, she noted that Thai entrepreneurs still had time to adjust their businesses as the act would come into effect six months from now.
