Phuket to hold major event later this month to boost halal-based tourism

PHUKET, 21 May 2015 – The “Phuket Andaman Halal Tourism 2015” festival is to be held during 28-30 May to promote the Year of Thainess and assure worldwide Muslim tourists that Phuket is “Muslim Friendly Destination”.

Director of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO) Soratham Jinda said at a press conference that the festival is to be held for the seventh year under the cooperation of three local organizations – PPAO, the Central Islamic Council of Thailand and the Office of the Sheikhul Islam or “Chularatchamontri” in Thai.

“The campaign is aimed at promoting halal-based tourism industry in the province in line with the government policy designating 2015 as the year of Discover Thainess,” added Mr.Soratham.

Activities in the three-day festival are divided into two sections. The first one features academic seminars on “Thai Muslim Way of Life 2015” to be held during 28-29 May. Surin Pitsuwan, a former Secretary-General of ASEAN, will be one of the guest speakers to explore the Andaman Sea as attractive tourism zone for Muslims. The second section is “Phuket Andaman Halal Expo 2015” which will take place on the last two days of this month, 29-30 May.
