BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will pay an official visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) on 8 October, and attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits on 9-11 October at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Lao PDR. This visit to Laos marks the Thai Prime Minister’s first overseas official visit.
On 8 October, Prime Minister Paetongtarn is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Lao PDR, and Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly. She will also pay a courtesy call on Thongloun Sisoulith, the President of Lao PDR.
The discussion will focus on cooperation to address transboundary issues, such as drug smuggling, online scams, haze, water resources management in the Mekong River, and cooperation on transportation connectivity and cross-border tourism.
On 9-11 October, the Thai Prime Minister will attend the 44th-45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits, hosted by Lao PDR under the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.” The Prime Minister will participate in both the ASEAN leaders’ meetings and the meetings with ASEAN’s dialogue partners, namely China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, India, the U.S.A., and Canada, as well as the United Nations. The leaders will discuss key strategic issues, such as ASEAN community-building and cooperation between ASEAN and external partners, as well as regional and international issues. Additionally, bilateral meetings with several other leaders have also been scheduled. (PRD)
