PSC Golf from the Growling Swan

Monday, May 18, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

Warm weather and an empty car park greeted us today at the course.  Playing from the white markers suited the players as the scoring was sizzling on a course in top condition and with greens slower than usual.

Ebrahim’s game ran the hottest and his forty two points attested to that.  Second place went to Alex Field, relegating Kissy Buchanan to third after both players handed in thirty nine points each.

Graham Rice, also on thirty nine points, missed the podium and was left ruing a brace of 2½-footers for birdies on the front nine par threes.  The gathered throng did not share in his disappointment.

1st Ebrahim (15) 42pts

2nd Alex Field (19) 39pts

3rd Kissy Buchanan (17) 39pts

Long Putts: Mike Gosden, Jim Groves.

Near Pins: Graham Rice (2), Kissy Buchanan, Alex Field.

Peter Grey accepted The Coveted Compass Cap with alacrity and Deefa the dog was on hand to collect further donations to the needy of Pattaya.

Wednesday, May 20, Wangjuntr – 3P Scramble

Nine hardy souls made the midweek trek for our first look at the Jungle course with badinage in abundance.  The course was very picturesque and in superb condition.

Nearing the eleventh green the heavens opened up and thirty plus people sought shelter in the large drink hut nearby.  A Thai gentleman caddy opened his back pack, pulled out a bowl of chicken and rice and proceeded to hook into it big time.  One farang asked “aroy?”  The caddy responded in English, “Delicious thank you and I appreciate your enquiry.”

One hour later play resumed and as per usual the greens were totally devoid of water.  Wes Rado produced a brand of long hitting not seen in many moons.  On the five hundred and forty one yard par-5 fourth, he pulled the big dog out of the holster and let her rip.  Then hit another driver off the floor to finish pin high for two and lipped out with the twenty-five yard chip for an eagle, phew!

Playing from a handicap of 10.50 Wes, Tony Campbell and Mike Gosden shot seventy one off the rod for a net 60.50, which proved good enough to win.

Glowing comments from a contented bunch confirmed we’ll do a return trip in the future.

Note: The GS is a friendly golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers male and female to have a hit at any of our weekly outings.  We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya.  Please contact Peter Grey if you are interested on 0861 503086.

The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts.  Bus transport departs the GS on Wednesdays at 10 AM to play at Cocos on undercover synthetic greens and on Sundays at the same time for open grass bowling at The Retreat.  Please contact Paul Rennison on 0843 454005 if you wish to partake.  The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is less than 400 baht so great value for a day out.
