VIENTIANE – Thailand and Vietnam have held bilateral talks during the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits, focusing on deepening strategic partnerships and expanding economic cooperation. The discussions covered various topics, including disaster relief efforts, trade, and tourism initiatives.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with her Vietnamese Counterpart Pham Minh Chinh and reaffirmed Vietnam’s status as a key strategic partner for Thailand. Prime Minister Paetongtarn also expressed her condolences to the Vietnamese people affected by Typhoon Yagi. She then announced that Thailand has donated 2 million baht to support Vietnam’s relief efforts.
According to Jirayu Huangsap, Government Spokesperson, both leaders agreed to facilitate trade and remove obstacles to achieve a bilateral trade target of 25 billion US Dollars, or approximately 850 billion baht.
In addition, Prime Minister Paetongtarn sought Vietnam’s support for Thai investments, particularly in the petrochemical, energy, and commercial banking sectors. Both sides pledged to enhance collaboration under the Three Connects Strategy, focusing on linking supply chains, local economies, and sustainable development strategies.
The leaders agreed to improve air connectivity by establishing more direct flights between Thai provinces and various cities in Vietnam. Currently, Thailand is the top destination for Vietnamese tourists, while Vietnam ranks as the sixth most popular destination for Thai travelers. Vietnam also expressed support for Thailand’s “Six Countries, One Destination” initiative to promote regional tourism.
Furthermore, Thailand accepted Vietnam’s invitation for an official visit and will co-chair the 4th Joint Cabinet Retreat to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Paetongtarn also extended an invitation to the Vietnamese Prime Minister for an official visit to Thailand in the near future. (NNT)
