CHIANG MAI, Thailand – The Joint Information Center (JIC) has provided an update on the flood situation and relief efforts in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Lamphun provinces as of October 12. Weather forecasts from the Northern Meteorological Center predict thunderstorms across parts of northern Thailand, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Lamphun, where storms are expected in 30% of the area.
In Chiang Mai, the city is recovering as floodwaters recede. Cleaning operations are underway, coordinated by the Chiang Mai Flood Relief and Recovery Coordination Center. Volunteer engineers and the Provincial Electricity Authority are working to inspect electrical systems in flood-affected homes. The province is also organizing “Big Cleaning” operations, involving government agencies, local organizations, and volunteers to restore the city for residents and tourists.
Chiang Rai has largely transitioned to recovery following heavy rains in September that caused widespread floods and landslides. The province’s “Quick Win” recovery plan is underway, addressing damage across 13 districts and affecting over 56,000 households. While there have been 14 fatalities, no new flood or landslide events have been reported. Efforts are focused on cleaning public areas and restoring infrastructure, including schools and community centers. Local officials continue to monitor weather forecasts, with thunderstorms expected in some areas over the coming days.
In Lamphun, water levels in the Ping and Kuang rivers remain manageable, although flooding persists in certain areas, particularly in Mueang Nga subdistrict. Local authorities have implemented a plan to manage water flow and are closely monitoring water levels within a reservoir nearby. The Royal Thai Navy has deployed boats to assist with water drainage, and emergency medical teams are providing support to flood victims. Over 500 residents have received health assessments with a focus on both physical and mental well-being.
