RANONG, Thailand – The 2024 Vegetarian Festival in Ranong province, held from October 3 to 11, has been celebrated as a successful cultural event, drawing both Thai and international visitors. Supported by the Ministry of Culture and various local organizations, the festival featured a grand procession of deities starting from Poomchanok Market and passing through the main community areas of Ranong Municipality. The event was organized in collaboration with the Ranong Provincial Cultural Council and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Minister of Culture Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol expressed satisfaction with the festival’s growing popularity and its role in promoting cultural tourism. The Ministry’s representative, Sasithorn Suwanmanee, Chief Inspector-General, attended the highlight event on October 10, where 22 local shrines, along with public and private sector representatives, participated in the festivities. The festival’s main attractions included traditional ceremonies, chanting rituals, and the procession of mediums called “Iew Keng” through the city.

The event preserves and promotes Ranong’s local cultural heritage while using cultural assets to generate economic value for the community. Activities such as the Go Teng Pole-Raising Ceremony, the Nine Emperor Gods Ceremony, and the fire-walking ritual were held alongside a large vegetarian food fair featuring over 40 stalls.

The Ministry of Culture has prioritized leveraging cultural heritage to create economic value for local communities. The goal is to enhance traditional celebrations, providing a platform for residents to share their customs while attracting tourism and contributing to the regional economy. (NNT)
