PHANG NGA, Thailand – The Similan Islands, a popular diving and snorkeling destination in Thailand, reopened to tourists on October 15 after a five-month closure to allow the recovery of the marine ecosystems.
On the first day of reopening, nearly 2,000 domestic and international tourists flocked to the islands to experience their natural beauty.
The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation had closed the Similan and Surin Islands from May 16 to October 14 during the monsoon season. With the reopening, the islands are now welcoming visitors until May 15 of the following year.
To ensure sustainable tourism, daily visitor numbers are capped at 3,850, with a quota of 3,325 for day trips and 525 for scuba diving.
Tour operators in the Tap Lamu area in Phang-nga province reported a bustling atmosphere as visitors registered, collected snorkeling gear, and boarded boats.
The majority of tourists on the first day were foreigners, with approximately 1,800 opting for snorkeling and 88 for scuba diving.
The Similan Islands, known for their pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs, are a major draw for tourists seeking adventure and natural beauty.
The reopening of the islands is expected to boost the local economy. (TNA)
