BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Han Zhiqiang, at the Ivory Room in the Government House on Wednesday, October 16. The discussions focused on the upcoming celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China in 2025, as well as key initiatives for bilateral cooperation. The meeting also highlighted Chinese donations to flood relief efforts in Thailand.
50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Ties
The upcoming year marks the Golden Year of Friendship between Thailand and China, celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations. Both sides agreed to organize cultural exchange activities starting later this year and continuing throughout 2025. Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized that this milestone presents a unique opportunity for cultural diplomacy, including promoting Thai soft power. Planned events include exchanges in music and culture, such as performances on the Chinese zither, or “guzheng,” by Princess Chulabhorn.
Ambassador Han confirmed that celebrations will begin on December 4, 2024, with the temporary enshrinement of the Buddha’s Tooth Relic in Thailand for 73 days. Additionally, China will send a new pair of giant pandas as goodwill ambassadors to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
Economic Cooperation and Investments
Both also discussed deepening economic ties, with a focus on new industries and regional cooperation. Prime Minister Paetongtarn invited Chinese businesses to invest in Thailand, particularly in areas like data centers, electric vehicle (EV) production, and the establishment of a low-earth orbit satellite launch base to support 6G development in the region.
Ambassador Han responded positively, expressing China’s willingness to provide support and information to Chinese companies interested in investing in Thailand’s emerging industries. The prime minister also thanked China for its decision in July 2024 to designate the Guan Lei port as an import hub for Thai fruits, enhancing trade between the two countries.
Mekong River Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid
Ambassador Han also confirmed that China had reduced water releases from its dams along the Mekong River to help alleviate flooding in northern Thailand and Laos. The gesture was well-received by the Thai government, which is dealing with severe flooding in these regions.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Han presented a donation of 7.2 million baht on behalf of the Chinese Embassy and the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce to assist Thai flood victims. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for this support, recognizing the continued friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Future Diplomatic Visits
The discussion also touched on upcoming official visits, with both sides expressing interest in high-level exchanges to further strengthen ties. Ambassador Han affirmed that China is ready to welcome Prime Minister Paetongtarn for an official visit to meet President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, further deepening bilateral cooperation in the years to come.
