The Cambodian government and the National Bank of Cambodia have issued a new 200,000 riel banknote (approximately 50 USD) in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the coronation of King Norodom Sihamoni.
According to a sub-decree signed by Prime Minister Hun Manet on October 16, the government authorized the printing and circulation of the new banknotes across the country, alongside the existing currency in circulation. Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia confirmed that 20 million banknotes would be printed as part of this special release.
The front of the new note features a portrait of King Norodom Sihamoni alongside his mother, with traditional Cambodian sculpture in the background. The denomination of 200,000 riel is displayed at both the top and bottom of the note, accompanied by an image of a naga sculpture from Banteay Srei temple. On the reverse side, the note shows a portrait of the King alone, along with text commemorating the 20th anniversary of his coronation, which took place on October 29, 2004.
The governor also emphasized that the issuance of the new 200,000 riel banknote would not disrupt Cambodia’s economic circulation. He clarified that the purpose of the new release is to replace worn-out banknotes that have been withdrawn from circulation, dismissing any concerns that the country was facing a financial shortage.
