PHUKET, 8 June 2015 – Passenger boats and fishing vessels will be required to have trash can on board for the prevention of garbage disposal into the sea, says the MNRE Minister.
The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Gen Dapong Ratanasuwan today revealeda reduction in marine debris in Phuket, due to cooperation from the public, tourists and tourism entrepreneurs in the area.
He has said that public cooperation is considered crucial to conserving coastal and marine resources as well as natural tourism attractions, which are the one of the main sources of income for the province.
The MNRE Minister mentioned that the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is now gearing up to impose regulations that will require all tourist boats and fishing vessels to have trash cans on board, before entering national park areas in an attempt to reduce marine debris dispersed into the sea.
Marine debris, such as trashes and seines, severely impacts the marine ecology as it damages the coral reef which is the breeding spot for many marine animals. Consumption of the trash and seines have also caused a number of fatalities in marine animals as well.
