CHIANG RAI, Thailand – A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s Shan State late on November 7, with its epicenter located 7 kilometers below ground and approximately 42 kilometers northeast of Mae Sai District in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Residents in both Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai felt the tremors, which occurred at around 11:30 p.m.
Local CCTV footage captured the shaking and sounds during the earthquake, showing vibrations in household areas, such as kitchens. Ms. Muay, a business owner near the Mae Sai–Tachileik border checkpoint, recounted the unsettling experience, noting that the recent flooding had only just subsided, and now residents are worried about possible aftershocks.
Rainfall on the same night added to concerns, and some noticed water levels rising slightly. Many residents in Mae Sai reportedly struggled to sleep due to fears of both flooding and earthquakes.
So far, no structural damage has been reported, including in Mae Sai District and historical sites in Chiang Saen District. Authorities are conducting assessments to ensure safety across affected areas.
