BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai Ministry of Finance is preparing to propose a financial assistance plan for seniors aged 60 and above, offering a one-time payment of 10,000 baht. This proposal, which is expected to be presented to the Economic Stimulus Committee, follows remarks made by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during a campaign speech in Udon Thani.
Phichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, clarified that the government’s plan will not overlap with the assistance already provided to vulnerable groups in the first phase. He explained that the proposal is aimed at addressing financial challenges faced by seniors, with a focus on those most in need.
The 10,000 THB payment will be distributed in phases, with the first phase targeting vulnerable groups and the second and third phases potentially focusing on seniors with urgent financial needs. Phichai emphasized that the government intends to use digital platforms like the “Pao Tang” app to streamline the distribution process, ensuring efficient communication with citizens.
Furthermore, Phichai confirmed that the Ministry of Finance will lead the proposal discussions, with plans to utilize the platform to ensure long-term, accessible communication between the public and the government. The Ministry of Finance also continues to assess the budget requirements, as the number of eligible seniors is relatively small, and the cost will be manageable.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to stimulate the economy and provide financial relief to those affected by economic challenges. (TNA)
