Tour guides and tourism-industry business owners assembled in Pattaya to learn how to raise their service standards at a seminar run by the Department of Tourism and National Institute of Development Administration.

Paromchote Thraiwech, deputy director of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, chaired the June 8 symposium at the A-One Royal Cruise Hotel. The event was attended by representatives of leading hotels, tourism associations, tour guides and many local business vendors.

The objective of the seminar was to improve service levels, develop tourist attractions and tighten safety standards in general. While popular, Pattaya has suffered various problems that have created negative impacts on its tourism sector.

Despite the ministry ordering improved service standards in 2008, problems have continued. The aim of the seminar was to improve and develop tourism to suit modern standards and regain a positive image for Pattaya.

The seminar included a public hearing from business vendors to exchange experiences and find solutions to the problems together.

NIDA members acted as advisors in hospitality, service standard improvement and development of general attractions. Opinions were gathered and will be discussed again in a future seminar.
