YALA, 19 June 2015 – Many Thai Muslims in Yala province participated in a religious ceremony on the first night of the holy month of Ramadan yesterday after an entire day of fasting.

A large number of Thai Muslisms in Yala congregated at Hua Saphan Daeng Mosque last night to participate in the Lamad ceremony, known as the worship of the God’s kindness.

The holy month of Ramadan is a period during which Muslims worldwide commit to doing good deeds and refraining from all vices. According to Hua Saphan Daeng Mosque Committee member Adisorn Tapohtoh, Allah has chosen the holy month of Ramadan as the holiest one out of 12 months in a year.

Every Muslim is expected to participate in the Lamad ceremony. Some mosques require Muslims to do 8 rakaats, while others may require up to 20 rakaat in one session.

Rakaat is a collection of movements and words followed by Muslims while offering prayers to God. The higher the number of rakaat in the session, the closer it would bring the prayers to Allah and his principles.
