BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department issued its 12th weather warning on December 15, forecasting a cold front that will significantly affect the upper regions of Thailand, with temperatures expected to drop by 1-3°C. The cold front is caused by a high-pressure system moving from China, bringing cooler weather along with strong winds. This shift in weather conditions could affect public health, urging residents in northern areas to take precautions against the sudden temperature change.

In addition, the department issued a separate warning for the southern regions, which are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from December 15-16. The northeast monsoon, combined with a low-pressure system passing through the lower Gulf of Thailand, will lead to severe weather conditions in the south, particularly in provinces located along the coast. Areas most at risk include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, and Satun.

The heavy rains may lead to flash floods and mudslides, particularly in hilly areas and regions with poor drainage systems. The Meteorological Department advised residents in flood-prone areas, especially along waterways and near the mountains, to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against the possibility of sudden flooding.

The heavy rains are also expected to affect maritime activities, with strong winds and waves of up to 2-3 meters, and higher in areas with thunderstorms. Fishermen and small boats in the Gulf of Thailand have been advised to refrain from going out to sea, and those already at sea should proceed with caution.

The cold front will continue until December 16, and the department recommends that the public regularly monitor weather updates through their official website or the hotline numbers 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, which are available 24/7.

This weather shift, which also affects the southern region’s coastal areas, marks a significant change from the previous warm conditions and requires readiness for both cold and wet conditions across the country.
