BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has confirmed ongoing efforts to secure the release of four Thai fishermen following a recent ruling by the Kawthaung Court in Myanmar. The court sentenced four Thai crew members and 27 Myanmar crew members under Myanmar’s foreign fishing and immigration laws.

Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information and MFA Spokesperson, stated that Thailand’s ambassador in Yangon has engaged with Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expedite the process. The Thai Embassy in Myanmar is closely monitoring the situation to ensure progress.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai provided further updates on the case. He confirmed that the fishermen remain detained on Kawthaung Island and explained that the sentence imposed is the minimum under Myanmar’s judicial process. Initial coordination efforts suggest the Thai crew members may be released around January 4th, which coincides with Myanmar’s National Day.

Minister Phumtham emphasized the sensitivity of the case, noting that the immediate priority is securing the release of the four Thai nationals. Discussing specifics of the charges or providing further comments could potentially affect the process. He added that once the fishermen return safely, the situation will be reviewed and clarified in more detail.

When asked if the release might involve a formal pardon, Phumtham said it depends on Myanmar’s legal process. For now, the focus remains on ensuring the safe release of the Thai crew members. (NNT)
