Thailand promotes OTOP textiles on global platforms through soft power

Opal, the reigning Miss Universe Thailand 2024 and third runner-up in the Miss Universe 2024 competition, was welcomed at the Ministry of Interior’s headquarters.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand is leveraging its soft power to promote OTOP items, particularly traditional textiles and handicrafts. Efforts focus on modernizing Thai fabrics while preserving their cultural identity. These initiatives aim to support local communities and expand global market opportunities.



Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Sabida Thaiset, Deputy Minister of Interior, met with Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri. Opal, the reigning Miss Universe Thailand 2024 and third runner-up in the Miss Universe 2024 competition, was welcomed at the Ministry of Interior’s headquarters.

The meeting focused on using Opal’s global influence to elevate Thai cultural products. Minister Anutin highlighted the “Thai Fabrics: Fun to Wear” project, which was inspired by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya. The project aims to modernize traditional Thai fabrics to attract a broader audience while maintaining their distinct community identities.



Opal was chosen as a key ambassador for this initiative. Her role will be to promote Thai textiles on international platforms, emphasizing their craftsmanship and cultural significance.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Interior also participated in the meeting. Advisory teams were also present to discuss strategies for preserving and globally promoting Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. (NNT)
